ORADORES
Elvira Fortunato
Professor Fortunato is a full professor in the Materials Science Department of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the New University of Lisbon, a Fellow of the Portuguese Engineering Academy since 2009 and decorated as a Grand Officer of the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator by the President of the Republic in 2010, due to her scientific achievements worldwide. In 2015 she was appointed by the Portuguese President Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Celebrations of the National Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities. She was also a member of the Portuguese National Scientific & Technological Council between 2012 and 2015 and a member of the advisory board of DG CONNECT (2014-15).Currently she is the director of the Institute of Nanomaterials, Nanofabrication and Nanomodeling and of CENIMAT. She is member of the board of trustees of Luso-American Foundation (Portugal/USA, 2013-2020). Fortunato pioneered European research on transparent electronics, namely thin-film transistors based on oxide semiconductors, demonstrating that oxide materials can be used as true semiconductors. In 2008, she received in the 1st ERC edition an Advanced Grant for the project “Invisible”, considered a success story. In the same year she demonstrated with her colleagues the possibility to make the first paper transistor, starting a new field in the area of paper electronics. Fortunato published over 500 papers and during the last 10 years received more than 16 International prizes and distinctions for her work (e.g: IDTechEx USA 2009 (paper transistor); European Woman Innovation prize, Finland 2011).
Louise Edwards
Louise Edwards has led the work on the SAPEA Evidence Review Report on Food from the Oceans, as Chair of the SAPEA team. She is Manager of the Academia Europaea Hub in Cardiff (UK), working extensively on the European Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM). Prior to her arrival at Cardiff in 2016, she spent 10 years in The Netherlands, holding international posts as Director of Professional Strategies at IFLA and as Director of The European Library.
Yngvar Olsen
Yngvar Olsen is Director for Marine Research Focus Area at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). His main interests are in the area of Food security and efforts to produce more food for humans from the ocean. He has published more than 150 papers in the area of Physiology and ecology of macro- and microalgae, Marine ecology and environment, including food web dynamics, trophic cascades, biochemical composition, and coastal eutrophication, Culture of seaweed and salmon, environmental interactions of aquaculture and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture, and Lipid nutrition of juvenile fish and zooplankton. He has been involved in several Board and Committees authoring a report (co-authored) assessing the potential for the Norwegian seafood industry up to 2050 (Olafsen et al 2012) and setting out a preliminary strategy for how seafood production can be increased closer to the levels of that in agriculture. He has worked with FAO in a project on expansion of marine aquaculture to exposed open or offshore waters.
Ricardo Serrão Santos
Ricardo Serrão Santos (RSS) is a Member of the European Parliament since July 2014 and full member of the Committees on Fisheries and on Agriculture and Rural Development and in the Inter-Parliamentary Delegation EU-Canada. RSS holds Doctorate Degrees from the Universities of Liverpool and the Azores. Marine Researcher for 30 years, he has over 300 scientific papers and books published. RSS dedicated most time to scientific ocean cruises, including several deep-sea dives in scientific manned submarines (Nautile, MIR and Alvin). RSS was President of IMAR-Institute of Marine Research, and Pro-Rector of the UAc and Director of the Department Oceanography and Fisheries of UAc, Vice-Chair of the European Marine Board and Chair of EurOcean. He has received several honorable mentions, prizes and awards, among which the Gifts to the Earth by WWF in 2002. In 2012 received the Autonomous Insignia of Recognition of the Azores. In 2013, he was knighted “Chevalier de l’Ordre de Saint Charles” by SAS Prince Albert II of Monaco. In 2017 he was award the Prize “Excellens Mare” da PricewaterhouseCoopers. RSS is as member of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon in 2009 and emeritus member of the “Portuguese Navy Academy” (Class of Arts, Letters and Sciences) in 2017.
Francisco Andrade
Francisco Andrade got his Biology degree from FCUL, a D.E.A. on Oceanology from Aix-Marseille II University, and his PhD in Ecology from the University of Lisbon, where he teaches since 1986. Presently a member of MARE- Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre UL, his main scientific interest areas are Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), namely using Remote Sensing tools, Ocean Services, Environmental Evaluation (EA), and Marine Spatial Planning (MSP). He lead and integrated a number of national and international projects on these fields, namely the TRANSMAP (EU) project on the East African Coast, a LTER-NSF and the LU_CES (NSF) projects on the East North-American Coast (SC and GA), and different applied research projects on the environmental evaluation and advisory of large coastal tourism projects in Portugal. He has authored and co-authored a number of publications on the broad areas of Marine Ecology, CZM, MSP and EA and has supervised PhD and MSc students at different Portuguese universities.
António Marques
António Marques is Project Coordinator and Senior Researcher at the Division of Aquaculture and Seafood Upgrading (DivAV) from the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA). He holds a PhD in Applied Biological Sciences and is a biologist with expertise on seafood quality and safety (chemical contaminants and microbiology), and in the application of new technologies for the improvement of seafood quality/safety. He has published over 80 peer‐reviewed articles and is the Guest Editor of Environmental Research and Food Chemical Toxicology.
António José Marques da Silva
António José Marques da Silva is an integrated member of the Research Centre in Archaeology, Arts and Heritage Sciences (CEAACP) at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. His doctoral research, published in the UK in 2012, dealt with maritime interactions between the north of Portugal and other imperial provinces during the early Roman occupation period. He developed his past activities as a professional archaeologist and manager of a commercial archaeology company, AMS Lda. He also taught Archaeology at the University of Coimbra. Between 2010 and 2015, he was involved in a post-doctoral research project, financed by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), the Portuguese national funding agency for science, research and technology, that dealt with practices and discourses on Mediterranean foodways, under the perspective of cultural change and the construction of identity. He recently published several books about this subject. The Mediterranean food heritage is now his main line of research.
